More information : (SP 5145 7929) Tumulus (OE) (1) Tumulus. Situated 30 chains W. of Coton House. "An ancient mound situated in the ornamental grounds attached to Coton House". (2) "...Undoubted sepulchral mound.. once opened by Bloxam.. it has no encircling ditch." "... the labourers employed missed the deposit, and a few fragments only of ancient pottery were found." (3) This is almost certainly a large, badly mutilated, mill mound; there is a "ramped tail" to the east and much disturbed evidence of a ditch elsewhere. The top of the mound has three depressions, probably "beds" for a post mill or - less likely - the excavations mentioned by authority 3. Published survey (25" 1960) correct. (4) Scheduled as 'Round barrow SW of Coton House'. (5)
